Retinal surgery encompasses a variety of procedures designed to address different conditions affecting the retina and vitreous fluid in the eye. Common types of retinal surgeries include:
1. Vitrectomy: This involves removing the vitreous gel to treat conditions like retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and complications from diabetic retinopathy. It can also be used to remove vitreous hemorrhage.
2. Scleral Buckle: Primarily used for repairing retinal detachments, this procedure involves placing a flexible band (scleral buckle) around the eye to gently push the wall of the eye against the detached retina.
3. Laser Photocoagulation: Used in diabetic retinopathy and retinal tears, this surgery involves using a laser to create small burns around the retinal tear to form scars that help in sealing the retina to the underlying tissue.
4. Pneumatic Retinopexy: This is another method for treating retinal detachment, involving the injection of a gas bubble into the vitreous space to gently push the detached retina back into place.
5. Macular Hole Surgery: Typically involving a vitrectomy and the insertion of a gas bubble, this surgery aims to close holes in the macula part of the retina.
6. Epiretinal Membrane Peel: This procedure removes a thin scar tissue layer (epiretinal membrane) that can form on the retina’s surface, causing vision distortion and problems.
7. Retinal Tack or Cryopexy: Used for retinal detachments, these involve either applying a tack to reattach the retina or using cryotherapy (extreme cold) to create an adhesive scar.
